What's Your Foundation?
Though a well-known landmark, and visited by thousands every year, the Leaning Tower of Pisa is an embarrassing display of the consequences of a faulty foundation. It was built in 1173, on soft soil and given a foundation less than 10 ft. deep. By the time of its completion in 1372, the lean was visible to the naked eye. In the late 1990s, the tower was closed and a 25-million-dollar project was completed to stabilize the structure, but they were only able to correct its lean by 16 inches... According to a CNN report, in 2005, when Hurricane Rita swept through southern Texas, it destroyed the home of the Adams family in Gilchrist, TX. When they rebuilt their home, they reinforced the foundation and 14 support beams were installed to lift the house 22 feet above normal sea level...
